Fabio Macedo is a historian specializing in intercountry adoption, child protection, and family-making from a transnational perspective, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Positioned at the intersection of history, social sciences, and law, his current research focuses on illicit practices in intercountry adoption systems.

His recent study, co-authored with Yves Denéchère and published in 2023, examines France’s domestic and international adoption policies and reveals the systemic nature and diversity of abuses that occurred from the 1970s to the early 2010s. The study has received wide recognition and public interest.

Fabio defended his PhD in 2020 at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris, with a dissertation titled “Choisir les enfants. Nationalité, race et ‘qualité’ dans l’histoire globale de l’adoption internationale (1830–1980)”, which translates to “Choosing Children: Nationality, Race, and ‘Quality’ in the Global History of Intercountry Adoption (1830–1980).”

In 2017, he received the Fass-Sandin Best Article Prize (French and Spanish) from the Society for the History of Children and Youth, and in 2021, he co-edited two special issues on the history of adoption in the French journal Annales de Démographie Historique.
